The Flip Side

There are times in life when it seems as if there is no way out of a situation and we feel stuck. It is at precisely that moment when we must remember the flip side.

The term “flip side” originated a long time ago, back in the time of vinyl records. There were two sides of the record – side ‘a’ and side ‘b’. If you finished with one side you simply flipped it over and there was more. Or, if you didn’t like the first side, you could flip it over and find something that was more suitable to your taste.

There are many ways that the term, ‘flip side’ is used– flipping a coin for good luck or purchasing a house to remodel then flipping it quickly to make a profit. When I think of the ‘flip side,’ I think of extremes, opposites and open-ended possibilities.

I think of pancake breakfasts. Just think about what happens to a pancake when left too long on one side before it is flipped. It burns, gets hard and rubbery and you cannot eat it. It needs to be carefully watched and turned at just the right moment in order to be wonderfully soft and delicious- pleasing to your eye and pleasing to your taste buds.

What a great metaphor for life! When we get stuck in one place or one situation for too long, turn it upside down, turn it around, turn it over, and do it differently – ‘Flip It.’   When we feel as if we are in a rut and there is no other way – ‘Flip It.’  Look for your options to remedy the situation and remember, you always have choices!  It is up to you to see them and to take them.

No matter what happens there is always a flip side, another point of view, the opposite of. For hot there is cold, for spring there is fall, for up, there is down, instead of walking, you can run.  You get the picture!  So remember, whatever happens in life there is always a flip side – another way of looking at a situation and dealing with it.
